SOPA, the Stop Internet Privacy Act and PIPA, the Protect Intellectual Property Act are great in theory, but in my opinion, very bad for business.
The idea behind the bills is to protect American movies, music and television from being illegally reproduced and sold, primarily by foreign sources. However, the way the bill is written will do little to stop piracy and a lot to hurt legitimate businesses.
The reality of the bill is that any major corporation can claim copyright infringement and demand that a website be shut down, with no oversight process in place. This means that innocent sites can and will be targeted. The costs of policing content, staying in compliance with the unbalanced law and potentially fighting accusations will be prohibitive for most businesses.
My belief is that SOPA and PIPA will shutter companies and put many people out of work. It will hurt the internet industry and our economy.
If you agree that SOPA and PIPA will cause more problems than they solve, I urge you to write to your Congressmen and Senators. You can find their information at USA.gov. If you have the time, please mail them an actual letter. You can simply print out your email and mail it, but believe it or not, those mail bags make a big impression in Washington.
